Women In Aerospace is a team dedicated to bruilding people up, together in a safe, inclusive place.
This team has three primary emphases: Building Connections in Industry, Skill Workshops, and Networking with Peers. WIA takes the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Complete Engineer program to heart and applies those concepts in their weekly meetings. WIA hosts industry speakers to learn about a multitude of career paths, in addition skill building workshops are commonplace, such as matlab training nights and resume reviews. These applied emphases wouldn’t work without having a strong group of individuals getting to know each other and become a team which is why WIA also hosts game and craft nights to create an inclusive place for everyone.
WIA invites many speakers to come and talk to the aerospace club and teach members about future opportunites and spark intrest for interships and even future jobs. It is a very vaulable part of the team as it helps build strong connections
The team had the pleasure of hosting Nautilus, an ocean exploration program as one of the presentions. WIA was able to talk directly with some of the crew and members were able to learn about how the research ship scanned the ocean for geological, biological, and archaeological discoveries alongside how the crew lives and works on the ship.
WIA was also able to host Indium, a research and manufacting company focused on electronics as a guest speaker. Members had the opportunity to learn about the research and development of parts alonside how it then turns into manufacturing for said developments. From this we were able to form a partnership and Indium is one of our amazing sponsors.
To be a desired applicant for interships and jobs, students should be well rounded in a multitude of skills. WIA hosts many workshops in order to build these skills in members.
MatLab is a commonly used programming language for engineering students so WIA has hosted a multitude of MatLab workshops, while incorporating a fun twist. In addition to MatLab skill nights, the team has hosted a resume building building workshop.
In order to be a successful team and to build soft skills WIA understands the importance of bringing together people in fun and creative ways. This is why WIA members come together weekly for a fun inclusive space.
WIA hosts many fun events for members to network amongst themselves and it also provides an inclusive space for all students. Some activites the team has worked on throughout the year include, crocheting, painting, tie dye, and game nights!
